Just happy to be there???

I was checking out ESPN's updated power rankings today and a thought crossed my mind. The 49ers were ranked 22nd overall and the comment for them was: "Win or lose, getting to play in games down the stretch that actually mean something is going to be good for the development of this young team."

My question is, are you just happy to be watching games with meaning this late in the season? Even though they've lost back to back games with playoff implications, should we as fans just be happy to even have this opportunity? Personally, I think you can be happy to be there while still getting pissed off at bad losses. It's good to be playing meaningful games, but that's no excuse for poor play in my opinion.

Thoughts?

It's kind of funny really. Even during the last few seasons - when the team had absolutely no hope - I have watched every game like it meant something. The players should always believe a game means something, as in actuality it does.

No matter if you're tied up with a 4-year contract or are in a contract year, you're playing for the priviledge to be on an NFL roster. Even if the team loses week-in and week-out, you've got to play your guts out. I watch every week hoping to see the players do just that.

Many people criticized Alex Smith last week, but I didn't see reason to. Sure, he missed seeing the open receivers. Sure his accuracy was off and many of his throws had bad results. But look beyond what you see on the field.

Up until last week, Norv Turner has kept a pretty tight lid on what the 49ers offense could/should do. Too often in the season have the 49ers offense played too conservatively. It's hard to notice when you see Gore break these conservative plays into super gains and TDs.

Last week, Turner tried to loosen the reigns on Smith and challenge him to see what he could do. During the two picks to McKenzie, Smith came out of center looking to throw deep. Perhaps it was something they tried in practice because they thought they could exploit the defense. No one really knows.

I'm getting way off topic, but it just boils down to the fact that I like watching the team play: win or lose. Sure, it's nice that they still have a "chance" at playoffs, but my enjoyment of the team goes beyond that. I like watching the players put out their best efforts, and TRY to win.
